Whānau Services

We offer support to adults and whānau who would like to learn and practice strategies to develop and maintain safe whānau relationship behaviours.

This service can be accessed alongside our programmes and is a great opportunity to bring together the learning and skills of the individual and each whānau member with the guidance and assistance of our whānau safety kaimahi/workers. This service can be delivered at our offices or in the home.

Our services for adults and whānau cover the following kaupapa/topics:

  • Emotional management

  • Self-care

  • Respectful communication

  • Parenting and whānau safety strategies.

  • Putting together a whānau safety plan.

  • Creating a whānau support network.

  • Practicing safe and respectful communication strategies and how to resolve conflict safely.

  • Practicing how we can manage difficult emotions with the support of our whānau.

Once a referral is received, we will arrange an assessment with one of our experienced workers. Our assessments are conversations that explore what has been happening and what the individual and their whānau would like to achieve.

Once the assessment has been completed, we will work with the individual and whānau to plan and match the appropriate service. If support is required that Muka Whānau Services cannot offer, we will assist with referrals to other agencies.

Non-Violence Support

For people who have used violence in whānau relationships and may have also experienced violence being used against them.

  • Our individual non-violence programme is appropriate for anyone wanting support to stop using violent behaviour and work towards the goal of whānau wellbeing.

Individual programme sessions are an hour long and occur once a week. The length of the programme is determined at assessment depending on the level of support required.

  • We currently run Non-Violence Support Groups for men from both our Napier and Hastings sites.

Group participants are invited to share their experiences, learn from each other, and practice new strategies to develop and strengthen violence free relationships.

Group sessions take place once a week for 16 weeks and the space is a non-judgemental and confidential environment guided by two experienced facilitators.

Safety Support

  • Our individual safety programme is appropriate for anyone wanting to establish safety within their whānau and learn strategies to develop and maintain safe relationships free of violence.

Individual programme sessions are an hour long and occur once a week. The length of the programme is determined at assessment depending on the level of support required.

  • We currently run Safety Support Groups for women from both our Napier and Hastings sites.

Group participants are invited to share their experiences, learn from each other, and practice strategies to maintain safety and develop relationships free of violence.

Women have the option of which day and location they would like to attend:

    • Wednesday mornings in Hastings

Group sessions take place once a week for 16 weeks and the space is a non-judgemental and confidential environment guided by two experienced facilitators.

For people who have experienced violence in a whānau relationship and may have used violence themselves.
